Lowes Foods is proud to announce they have begun tracking and reporting local produce purchases to the North Carolina 10% Campaign. From May through August, Lowes Foods sourced over 20% of its total produce from farmers within the state.

The 10% Campaign is an initiative of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems, NC State University, NC A&T University and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to encourage all North Carolinians – consumers, organizations, agencies, and businesses alike – to spend 10 percent of their food budget on locally grown and produced foods.  According to the Campaign, North Carolinians spend about $35 billion a year on food and if each person spent 10 percent—$1.05 per day—locally, about $3.5 billion would circulate in the state’s economy.

Lowes Foods signed onto the campaign in March 2012. Lowes Foods gives credit to their customers and employees for the strong enthusiasm toward their locally grown initiatives. They believe this support is what has allowed them to go above and beyond the initial pledge of 10% to over 20%.

Teisha Wymore, the NC 10% Campaign director, said “Working with committed partners like Lowes Foods is critical to making systematic changes. Lowes Foods is supporting our farmers and it’s important for consumers to see the connection between their grocer and their farm neighbors.”

Lowes Foods believes in purchasing locally, not only for their customers, but to act on their values of corporate responsibility and to enhance their state’s local job economy and communities. They continue to establish direct-to-store deliveries with farms near each of their 100 stores in North Carolina and their warehouse. Not only can Lowes Foods customers buy local produce in stores, but the Locally Grown Club program, which began in 2011, allows customers to order local produce boxes in advance each week.

As a family-owned Carolinas-based company, Lowes Foods looks forward to continuing to grow their percentage of produce sourced from within North Carolina.
