On Thursday May 20, 2010 at 10:00 am, Lowes Foods, Smithfield and Food Network star, Paula Deen will help deliver meals to those in need. A donation will be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina in Winston-Salem consisting of 100,000 servings of protein. Lowes Foods will also present a check for an additional $1000 donation to the food bank.

"We are happy to have Smithfield Foods and Paula Deen join us in our fight to feed those that are less fortunate. It is great to know that we have friends that help us feed friends. The need within our communities is greater than ever. Families that are turning to the food bank never imagined themselves suffering such hardship. Together we can meet those needs and help others get through difficult times." Steve Hall, President of Lowes Foods.

Food Banks nationwide are reporting a 25 percent increase in the number of people coming to them for help. The current recession and the continuing rise in unemployment are having a profound effect on Food Banks’ ability to meet the demand. As a result, food assistance organizations across the country have been reporting over the past year that more individuals and families are turning to them for assistance including more first-time visitors, unemployed workers, employed individuals, seniors and families with children.

"Smithfield Foods is committed to hunger relief," said Dennis Pittman, Public Affairs Director, Smithfield. "We felt the need to help shine a spotlight on an ever-increasing problem for American families. Providing hunger relief will continue to remain a priority."

Lowes Foods will begin collecting food in all store locations starting in June for the “Bag Childhood Hunger” donation drive. These donations will be given to local food banks across North Carolina to help children who do not receive school lunches during the summer months. For more information on how to make a donation to your local food bank visit www.feedingamerica.org or stop in any Lowes Foods store during the month of June.
